Moving chronologically from the medieval Croxton’s Play of the Sacrament, to Christopher Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, and finally to William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, this lecture will trace the transition from the theatricalized Jew-villain to the emergence of humanized Jews.
